10 Texas Holdem Tells part 1

April 10th, 2008

In this two part guide, you’ll discover ten of the best tips for saving money or winning the pot. As it’s impossible to see their cards, the only things to go off are their face and body language. You must constantly pay attention to your opponents, watching how they act and what they do.

Tip 1. Watching how the chips are arranged can help you identify the type of player you are up against. If the chips are arranged tidily it is 90% likely that the player is a tight, meaning they will usually have a strong hand when they call and that they will rarely bluff. However is the chips are not kept tidy it is likely that they are a loose player and therefore more likely to bluff and take risks.

Tip 2. If a player throws their chips in nervously, so they spill over and they then tidy them up it means they are bluffing. Cleaning up the chips means that they are trying to hide it, so you won’t call the hand, when in fact this is exactly what you should do.

Tip 3. The way a player asks for chips is also a good tell. If they are showy and loud then they are a loose aggressive player, whilst a wary tight player will ask in a quieter, politer manner.

Tip 4. If a player sighs or tiskes, this is an obvious bluffing tell. They are trying to hide the fact that they have a good hand so don’t bet!

Tip 5. One of the best tells a player will give is when they first look at the flop, so don’t look at it yourself, but look at them. If they look away and attempt to seem disinterested it means they have a good hand and are trying to hide it. Those that stare at the flop, as though willing it to change, have a bad hand.

These are the first 5 tips to help you make a start, and the next 5, which are even more useful, are also worth a read.
